HOW TO DETERMINE PCV (PACKED CELL VOLUME)

The Packed Cell Volume (PCV) Test 1. Objective: This is one of the oldest tests done in medical practice. The objective of this test was to determine the percentage of red blood cells (RBCs) in whole blood. It  also helped to assess the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen. ________________________________________ 2. Principle: The test was based on the principle that when blood was centrifuged, the red blood cells settled at the bottom of the tube, forming a packed column. The ratio of the packed RBC column to the total blood column gave the packed cell volume (PCV), expressed as a percentage. ________________________________________ 3. Materials: • Microhematocrit capillary tubes • Microhematocrit centrifuge • Plasticine or sealing clay • Microhematocrit reader • Lancet • Alcohol swab • Cotton ________________________________________ 4. Procedure (Microhematocrit Method): 1. The fingertip was cleaned with an alcohol swab and pricked with a sterile lancet. 2. Blood was collected into ...

TEAMWORK IN HEALTHCARE

Teamwork in healthcare

PEOPLE IN HEALTHCARE! STOP SAYING “IT’S DOCTORS’ WORK” — LEARN IT. MASTER IT. ONE DAY, IT MAY SAVE A LIFE.

You see that clinical skill you keep avoiding?

That one you say “its not my work”?

One day, you’ll be the only one standing between a patient and death… and your confidence, not your uniform, will make the difference.

Here are key clinical skills everybody in healthcare should be at least fairly knowledgeable at — no shortcuts:

1. Cannulation & IV Line Setting

Know your needles. Understand gauge sizes and color codes. Learn how to set a line like your life depends on it because one day, someone else’s might.

2. Lab Test Interpretation

Don’t just carry results, try to understand them.

What does a low hemoglobin mean? What are the signs of sepsis in lab values? Learn to think like a clinician.

3. Vital Signs with Critical Thinking

It’s more than checking numbers. Know what they mean.

A sudden drop in BP, a slight rise in pulse? these are signs. Train your eyes and your instincts.

4. Basic Life Support (BLS)

You don’t need to work in emergency to save a life.

Be ready. Know CPR. Act fast. Be the reason a family doesn’t bury their loved one.

5. Medication Administration (Oral, IV, IM, SC)

Know your drugs. Know the right route, right dose, right time and what to watch out for. Mistakes are costly.

6. Wound Dressing & Aseptic Techniques

A poorly cleaned wound can cause infection.

Asepsis is not a “theory paper.” It’s a skill. Own it.

7. NG Tube Insertion & Care

Hehehe😅, this might be a little tricky, but if you can, then learn how to insert, confirm placement, and manage complications. Don’t panic when it’s your turn to learn.

8. Clear, Legal Documentation

If you didn’t write it, it never happened.

Protect your patient. Protect yourself. Your pen is your power.

Stop hiding behind the phrase “I wasn’t taught.”

Start saying, “I took time to learn.” It sounds better and makes you standout.

Dear caregiver, don’t wait until the day you need the skill to wish you had learned it.

Be competent. Be confident. Be prepared.

Let’s raise the standard. Together🙏

PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE(PUD): MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT

PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE(PUD): MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT Read till end❗ It is important we understand that ulcer is indeed curable and symptoms can be managed effectively for better outcomes.   Signs and symptoms of PUD For quick recovery, these few steps should be adhered to by all suffering from peptic ulcer disease; 1.Consume food at regular intervals, in general, take small meals every 3 hours. Since presence of food in the GIT stimulates acid production which could errode existing ulcers, it is best to take small portions at intervals to reduce acid corrosion at wound sites. 2.Take meal 2 to 3 hours before bed time. This is because lying down immediately after a meal could result in acid reflux, causing heartburns and exacerbate oesophageal ulcers. 3.Eat food slowly and chew it properly. Take fresh fruits, salads and vegetables in adequate quantities. 4.Avoid intake of spicy and sour food like pepper soups, pepper sauces and chillis 5.Cut down intake of coffee, tea and other caffei...

ANTIMICROBIAL ABUSE IN LIVESTOCK FARMING

What problem could one encounter while consuming livestock? First, antibiotics are used to prevent, treat and control bacterial infections in livestock. Just like humans, animals can contract infections, such as pneumonia. As a case study,Pork is the world's second most consumed meat, accounting for roughly 35% of total meat consumption. China, the United States, and the European Union are the world's largest pork producers, accounting for roughly 80% of total pork production. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that pork had significantly higher levels of antibiotics than chicken, beef, and lamb. https://bringsconserve.com/qp970858?key=0b6d33fbbd24ee17ba922b2bfaf034ef  Antibiotics are used in the breeding process primarily because they reduce disease and mortality in pigs while also rapidly increasing pig weight. In the United States, roughly 27.1 percent of Medically important antibiotics are used in the pig industry, and...
