A cancer cell about to split |
Recent reports have it that for the first time in history, a drug under testing has managed to completely remove every trace of cancer in patients partaking in the drug trial.
The course of therapy was estimated to be six months long, involving a total of 18 patients, all diagnosed with rectal cancer and by the end of the program every one of them, on testing, had no trace of rectal cancer in them.
After six months or more of follow-up, the patients continued to show no signs of cancer — without the need for the standard treatments of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy — and cancer has not returned in any of the patients, who have now been cancer-free for a range of six to 25 months after the trial ended.
This is truly remarkable feet and applauds are raining down on researchers at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where the research was carried out
Dostarlimab is a programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1)–blocking monoclonal antibodies.
This new treatment is a type of immunotherapy, a treatment that blocks the 'don't eat me' signal on cancer cells enabling the immune system to eliminate them.
The immunotherapy treatment with dostarlimab targets a subtype of rectal cancer that has the DNA repair system not working. When this system isn't working there are more errors in proteins and the immune system recognizes these and kills the cancer cells.
This Dostarlimab was approved for medical use in the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) in April 2021.
Before this day, Dostarlimab was used to treat cancer of the uterus lining (endometrial cancer). This medication is also used to treat certain types of tumors (solid tumors). It works by changing the action of your immune system, directing it to attack cancer/tumor cells.
The most common side effects reported in the study include fatigue/asthenia, nausea, diarrhea, anemia, and constipation. Additional common side effects reported include vomiting, joint pain, itching, rash, fever, and hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormones).
We hope that this wonder drug can be mass-produced and its cost subsidized, especially as it costs $11,000 per dose so that more people wouldn't have to see cancer as a death sentence anymore.
